Country Manoir with Pool and Panoramic View of the Pyrénées
Gite and Chambres d’Hôtes
Nestled amongst ancient oak and chestnut trees at the end of a picturesque valley with a panoramic view of the Pyrénées, Castel de Fonpré is a haven of calm. Only 40 minutes from Pau airport, the property is surrounded by lawns, rose hedges and gardens and the morning birdsong or the calls of owls and crickets in the evenings is all that disturbs the peace.
The sympathetic refurbishment of this elegant 19thC country manoir was completed in 2009 and the property offers a gite, which is located away from the main house bordered by its own garden, and three elegant chambres d’hôtes.
A sparkling heated pool surrounded by parasols and comfortable loungers with ta summer kitchen and pool BBQ is at the disposal of guests, who will also find many other shaded or sunny spots, in which to relax and enjoy the views in this picturesque, tranquil corner of south west France.
This is a wonderful place from which to explore the surrounding countryside, wineries and local markets, the historic city of Pau or to venture further afield to the mountains, Lourdes, the Atlantic beaches or Spain, all of which are close enough for a day’s ‘outing’. Less strenuous pursuits include frequent brocante/antique fairs and fine dining at several Michelin starred restaurants. There are many music festivals during the summer – notably the famed International Jazz Festival at Marcia in August which is only 40 minutes away.
For those who wish to relax closer to home there are many lovely wooded walks – the lane in front of the property is on the well known ‘Promenade des Orchidées’ which abounds with wild orchids during May. A medieval chateau, once frequented by one of the Musketeers and the Knights Templar stands sentinel just up the hill. A short walk down to the end of the property reveals the little river Lees – suitable for a bit of paddling and hopeful fisherman.
Small cooking classes in the main house kitchen can be arranged with several excellent local chefs centred around local specialities such as ‘foie gras’ in its many forms and duck in many more. A qualified local masseuse is also available by prior appointment.
The local town of Lembeye, less than 10 minutes away, provides all amenities including a supermarket, a renowned charcuterie and several restaurants and bars.
The owners are English/French speaking who will assure you receive a very warm welcome and are committed to assisting you in any possible way to make your holiday special.
